CHECK IN AND ARRIVAL

Check in time is 4:00 pm

If we did not make your travel arrangements, please let us know ahead of time when you expect to arrive.
We will meet you at the Villa, show you around and answer any questions you may have. Should you arrive early we will try our very best to accommodate an early check-in or you can drop off your bags and try one of our recommended restaurants below or head to the grocery in the maps below and load up for your stay.

What to bring
Your home is set up with all the necessary start up amenities you need for your arrival, including paper towels, trash bags, coffee, sugar, and creamer. You will need additional items for the length of your stay, but we've got a set to get you started. We will have ample supplies of bottled water, dish, hand and facial soaps, shampoo, conditioner, and body wash for your entire stay.

For those that crave a 'check-list' - here is a fun list of reminders to bring to the beach:

  • Camera
  • Cash. US bills are accepted everywhere in Belize. Many places do not take credit cards. Bring small bills for tips and small purchases.
  • Good Sunglasses
  • Sunscreen
  • Bug Spray (Sawyer Products 20% Picaridin seems to work for everyone and available on Amazon) https://a.co/a81T8MZ
  • Hat for shade
  • Shorts and short sleeve shirts (can be worn anywhere in Hopkins)
  • Swim suit
  • Open toe flip flops (you can wear them anywhere you go in Hopkins)
  • A light weight cover-up for windy evenings and sunny days on the beach
  • A device with music loaded. Many music services do not work in Belize. Apple and Amazon music do work here.
  • Jungle adventures: light-weight long sleeve shirt and pants, closed shoes
  • Island adventures: light-weight long sleeve shirt and pants
  • Gluten intolerant guests will find most of the restaurants can easily accommodate you but gluten free items are hard to find in the groceries so bring your favorite goodies.

Items we provide you don’t need to bring:

  • Hair dryers
  • Body wash, soap, shampoo, conditioner
  • Blu-tooth stereo at bar
  • Beach and bath towels
  • Iron and Ironing Board
  • Bedside USB chargers (just bring your cables)
  • Beach and indoor games
  • Beach floats
  • Starters on coffee, creamer, laundry soap

Other items to consider:
As soon as you get off the plane you can go to the duty free store and get US brand liquors and good wine. The local rums and vodka here (purchase those in Hopkins) are very good and inexpensive but wine and US brand liquors are quite expensive in the Village.

GETTING TO THE VILLA (Concierge and Tour Services)
We can book all of your travel and tours, assuring you the best licensed guides and transportation options and a care free vacation. Below are three options for getting to Hopkins from the Belize City Airport. Tour services are listed towards the end of this list.

1. You can rent a car at the airport and drive down. It is a terrific way to start your trip sightseeing and the new Coastal road makes the drive very easy and less than 2 hours.

It does offer you flexibility once you get here. We will provide you with easy turn by turn directions. Crystal has good vehicles at a fair price and have a location right at the airport https://www.crystal-belize.com If you have a large group the transit vans are terrific!

2. You can fly which is a 15 minute flight and we can have a vehicle pick you up at the Dangriga Airport and bring you here (about 30 minutes). I can book the flights for you and you just pay at the gate when you arrive with cash or credit card.

Flights are $170.00 US round trip (at last check) per person and the ride from the airport is $55 US one way total for 1-2 people, and $10 US each additional person. If this is what you want, simply forward your flight information for each person showing their name, to vacation@villarisingsun.com and we will make the proper connecting flights and transfers for you and forward you your itinerary.  If you choose this option, we do recommend renting a golf cart for your stay so you can explore the entire village. Maya Air  and Tropic Air

3. We can have a nice van pick you up at the airport in Belize City and drive you down. It’s $200 US for 1-2 people and $25 US each additional person each way.

You don’t need to have a vehicle, we have many nice restaurants and bars a close walk to the Villa, however, it does not offer you the freedom to explore the village and all the fun restaurants, bars, and music, which is spread out along the 3-1/2 mile beach and other area attractions that are close by.

On another note, you can rent a golf cart and can drive them anywhere in Hopkins. They are a great and fun way to see everything. A golf cart that would fit four is $65 US/day or $325 US/week which includes pick up and drop off. Fuel tanks are delivered FULL and are required to be returned full of fuel. We can make reservations and have it waiting on you at the Villa.

TRANSPORTATION LINKS

Crystal Auto Rental (Use the airport location. It's just outside the doors when you exit the airport)
Maya Air (A Gold Standard local airline with flights from the Belize City airport to Dangriga)
Tropic Air (A Gold Standard local airline with flights from the Belize City airport to Dangriga)

Easy Driving Directions
Below are easy turn by turn driving directions directly to Villa Rising Sun to make your drive simple.

Driving Directions from the Belize International Airport is less than 2 hours for the new Coastal road and 2.5 – 3 hours for the scenic route.

QUICKEST ROUTE (Coastal Road):
The Coastal Road is completed and the drive from the airport is less than 2 hours. The road is terrific, but we do not have turn-by-turn directions as yet. Google Maps will route you using the Coastal Road because it is the shortest route. It does have spotty cell coverage and few services so this is best done during daylight.

SCENIC ROUTE:
Take the airport road to the Northern Highway. There will be a Shell gas station on your left at this intersection (2 minutes, 1 mile).

  1. Turn left on the Northern Highway and travel to the Burrell Boom cutoff. There will be tall communication tower on the left side of the road before the Burrell Boom cutoff (10 minutes). Turn left on the Burrell Boom road and take it until it meets the Western Highway at a roundabout in Hattieville. Stay right. (15 minutes, 11.5 miles)
  2. Turn right or west on the Western Highway and take it past the Coastal Highway until you reach the Hummingbird Highway which goes through the outskirts of the capital, Belmopan (40 minutes, 32 miles).
  3. Turn left on the Hummingbird Highway. You will pass a couple of gas stations shortly after you turn on this road. If you need gas, get it!
  4. Continue on the Hummingbird Highway through the Maya Mountains, past citrus groves until you reach the Southern Highway. Please note that there are many one-lane bridges on the Hummingbird Highway. Please be alert! (1 hour, 10 minutes, 48 miles)
  5. Turn right on the Southern Highway. Soon after you pass through Silk Grass Village there will be a road to the left toward Hopkins. Turn left on the Hopkins Road. (5 minutes, 10 miles).
  6. Take the Hopkins Road until you reach Hopkins. (10 minutes, 6 miles).
  7. Turn right at the junction in Hopkins (the only stop signs) in the village.
  8. Drive for 2.2 miles (you will pass Jaguar Reef, Parrot Cove and Beaches & Dreams). Villa Rising Sun is the 7th building past Beaches and Dreams on the left (beach side). It's a large yellow Villa with a garage and a sign above the garage. There is a guest parking space in the driveway. Our GPS location is 16.83684987671456, -88.26805707067257 and my local phone number is 663-0593.

WIFI / INTERNET DETAILS

The Villa has a fiber optic connection and free Wi-Fi throughout the Villa as well as on the beach, beach bar and the dock. The details are:
SSID: Rising Sun Guest   Password: risingsun2015

    TELEVISION
We have Smart TVs with IPTV and popular streaming services and about 8000 digital stations from around the globe, including most of the movie channels (HBO, Showtime, etc..).

    BEACH BAR AND REFRIGERATORS

Please enjoy your private bar. We believe it’s one of our finest amenities so take full advantage.

There are six bar stools, two tables and eight chairs. Plenty of room for a nice dinner on the beach and a great spot to escape the sun and enjoy your favorite adult beverages.

Make certain you bring a portable device loaded with your favorite music to make your evenings even more enjoyable. Apple and Amazon Streaming Music services work in Belize while some others do not. To connect your device, simply use Bluetooth.

It makes for a great time day or night, drinks or dinner. There is a refrigerator with freezer, sink, a nice sound system and a android television to watch your favorite videos, a movie or sporting event.

The two covered switches as you enter behind the bar are for the overhead fans.

Next to those switches is a black slider switch on the cord that controls and dims the lights.

The water in the sink is filtered and safe to drink.

The cabinet to your left as you enter behind the bar has three doors. The right side is for storing bottles, the middle cabinet has a stereo amp. You can plug directly into it from your device or use Bluetooth. The left button will turn on the power. The volume is pre-adjusted to its loudest settings before it will reset (turn off) the amp. If this happens simply turn the amp back on and lower the volume dial a bit. Use your device to control the volume remotely.

    OTHER HELPFUL INFORMATION

    KITCHEN
All kitchen equipment is self-explanatory but please ask if you need any assistance. We have a number of appliances, all the pots and pans, cooking utensils and silverware you should need for a large group so dig around the cabinets and make yourself at home.

Some of the items we have are:
A blender, Child's highchair and crib (available upon request), Coffee machine, Cooking utensils, Outdoor Grill, Kitchen stove, Microwave, Oven, Refrigerator/Freezer, Rice steamer, Spices, Toaster, Water dispenser with purified water. Just let us know if you need more purified water anytime.

    DRINKING WATER
While we supply bottled water, the tap water at Villa Rising Sun has a four-stage filtration system for all water coming through the house and bar, and fine to drink. When going into the Village you should drink bottled water.

    LAUNDRY
We have a Speed Queen commercial washer and dryer for your use. Please use the HE2 pods we supply.

    CURRENCY

The Belize dollar is tagged to the United States dollar and exchanged with most merchants at a fixed $2.00 (BZD) = $1.00 (USD). Most places readily accept United States dollars, and some take credit cards. We recommend bringing small bills as many places have a hard time breaking large ones. Many people underestimate how much we have become dependent on credit cards, and regret not bringing more cash.

    ATM
The Hopkins ATM is located by the Grocery store at the main junction as you enter Hopkins. It is hit or miss as to whether it is working or not.

    TIME ZONE
Belize observes the Central Standard Time (US and Canada); Mountain Standard during Daylight Savings time in the U.S. Daylight Savings is not observed in Belize.

    TRASH/GARBAGE
Trash bags are available in the drawer above the trash can and at the bar. Trash bins are located outside on the roadside of the property. All garbage that goes in these outside bins should be in trash bags (no loose garbage). Please take garbage at the bar in nightly or the critters will make a mess.

    DAMAGE & LOST KEYS
We strive to keep the villa clean and functioning well for our guests. You are responsible for damages (beyond normal wear-and-tear) to the villa and its contents. If you lose your key, we will provide a replacement for a $30 US fee.

    AIR CONDITIONING
You will find a main AC unit in the main room that cools are the common areas, as well as units in the master and back bedroom that allows you to control the temperature of the home. Additionally, we have ceiling fans in the main area, bedrooms, and bathrooms. If you're running the air conditioning, please ensure that all windows and outside doors are closed to ensure it operate to maximum efficiency.

We recommend a setting of 73F / 23C which we find keeps the place at a comfortable temperature. Setting the AC units below this temperature may cause the unit to freeze and stop working. Please let us know right away if that happens.

    LAUNDRY & HOUSEKEEPING
Should you find anything out of order, please notify us immediately. Linen and towels will be provided at the beginning of your stay. We will check with you and make certain you always have fresh towels and linens. Or if you need fresh towels or sheets in-between cleanings just ask. We will provide weekly housekeeping but will try and schedule when you are out on an adventure. If you want additional housekeeping just let us know.

FIRST AID KIT & FIRE EXTINGUISHER
The First Aid Kit and Fire Extinguisher are located in the kitchen under the kitchen sink. And outside at the bar.

    SMOKING
In consideration for all guests, we do not allow smoking anywhere inside the Villa, but you are happy to smoke anywhere outside. There are ashtrays provided at the bar.

    CELL PHONE
The cell phone is charged and has some credit on it. If you wish to add additional credit you can do so at any of the Chinese grocery stores. We have preprogrammed helpful phone numbers in for you as well. We recommend you carry the phone on you during your stay, but should you lose the phone, we unfortunately need to charge $60 USD to replace it.

    SECURITY
We advise that you keep your doors and windows locked whenever you go to the beach, leave the property, or are sleeping. When going into the village use common sense and it is always best to travel in a group. We have genuinely friendly villagers but no matter where in the world you go there is always one bad guy.

    GROUNDS KEEPER
Our grounds keeper keeps the beach and property looking nice for you. He is here every couple of days. Feel free to ask him to cut you open a fresh coconut or two. Delicious with the local rum.

    SAFE
There are two safes provided. The locations will be conveyed to you by the Property Manager. To use the safe simply enter a 4-digit code followed by the # key while it is open. Then test your code to make certain it works and the safe will be ready for you to use.
Note: If you forget the password or the batteries in the safe lose their charge just let us know.

    POWER
In the unlikely event of a power failure standby lights in each guest room and the main area will automatically come on. There are also flashlights in each guest room right next to the bed. When power does go out it is typically for a very short duration. Because the water is powered by an electric pump, please try to refrain from using water during this period.

    BABY FURNITURE
We all know how much equipment it takes to keep the little ones healthy and happy, and how much of a hassle it is to bring that stuff with you everywhere you go. Not to worry, we can supply all of the baby and child equipment you could need while on vacation. So don’t drag it all down here with you. We can have a highchair and crib assembled before your arrival. We prefer that you provide your own linens but will supply a crib sheet if needed. Please let us know where you would like the furniture set up.

    BEACH GEAR
We have a couple of floats so you can relax in the warm Caribbean Sea so don’t worry about bringing those. We also have a complimentary two-person kayak, several loungers and beach chairs as well as beach towels. If you book a snorkeling or fishing adventure the guides will supply all the gear for those occasions as well.

MAPS & GETTING AROUND (Restaurant and Bar Guide)

This may be the most important thing to assure you have a great time. It is a map and list of our favorite local places. This is a Google Map link and you can download the map for offline access making it a great tool when you are out and about without Wi-Fi access. We do our best to keep this updated as restaurants and bars are always on the change.

    LIQUOR, GROCERIES AND FRUIT

Shopping in Hopkins is an experience in itself. It normally includes a trip to at least one grocery and fruit stand to get everything you want. Beer, wines, and liquor can be purchased at any of the grocery stores which are open 8 am till 9 pm. If you want a case of beer (We highly recommend the local Belikin) just ask at the Dong Lee grocery and they will get it for you. There is a deposit on the bottles and crate so don’t throw them out, just trade them in for new ones. The local vodka and rums are delicious. Dean makes the best rum and tequila in Hopkins! Try the Travelers One Barrel Rum or Lerska Vodka for a real treat. Luckily we have a map with the best spots to shop. FiWi Mart is your best spot for groceries. Dong Lee is best for beer and liquor. The other two are a backup.

It was considered one of largest and most powerful cities of the Classic Period, until it was suddenly abandoned over 1000 years ago and the jungle outgrew the massive temples and structures there.

    Fly Fishing Tour
Be prepared to develop a passion for chasing the Grand Slam: permit, bonefish and tarpon.

Belize’s southern barrier reef is crystal clear and one of the best destination for flats fishing. The shallow waters are home to lots of flats perfect for playing catch and release with the elusive permit, bonefish, and tarpon.

Our friendly and knowledgeable guides will transport you to calm turquoise water about 35 minutes away around South water Caye and it features a large sea grass lagoon, teeming with coral shoals and pristine flats. Whether you are an avid, intermediate, or novice fisherman, our local guide is ready to take you on the trip of a lifetime where they can be as hands on or as relaxed as you need.

Huge schools of bonefish spread out over the lagoon. Tailing these large bonefish schools will provide hours of fly rod action at your own pace.

When the tide is just right, your guide will take you to cast on neighboring mangrove flats, home to permit up to ten pounds in size. Try your hand at snook and tarpon. Tarpon often reach 75 pounds in the inner channel of southern Belize.

    Bioluminescence Tour
This tour is seasonal: January – May.

The Sittee River is the gateway to one of nature’s breathtaking phenomena – bioluminescent or “burning wata” as the Belizeans call it. This night tour is seasonal. Conditions have to be just perfect in the Anderson Lagoon and it usually occurs in the driest months like February – April.

Head out on the 5 minute boat ride to Anderson Lagoon on the Sittee River. The night sky is UNBELIEVABLE. Thick with stars all the way down to the tree line.

Go through a tiny cut to get to the lagoon and you will be surrounded by the giant mangroves and then shoot out into the lagoon. It’s pitch black, the guide’s flashlight beam cutting across the lagoon is the only light and then he turns it off. The boat picks up speed and the wake glows. A blue light. As the boat pick up more speed, the tiny algae, which settle in the lagoon during the dry season, get agitated and glow. It’s absolutely unbelievable.

Our guide will stop the boat and you just stare into the water. Schools of fish or any marine life swimming through the lagoon create a phosphorescent trail which can look like a glowing cloud in the water. Hundreds of jelly fish pulsating in the water. They feed on the algae – it’s all along their edges and inside them.

Just moving your hand around in the water is miraculous. You leave aqua blue glowing blue bubbles.

Spice Farm and Botanical Garden Tour
The Belize Spice Farm & Botanical Gardens, located at the foothills of the Maya Mountain in the Toledo District is the result of the inspiration and hard work of Tom and Tessy Mathew.

When vacationing in Belize, the Mathews, originally from Kerala, India, were struck by the fact that the climate and topography of Belize are quite similar to that of Kerala, which is known for its world famous spices, such as Tellicherry Black Pepper, cardamom, cloves, cinnamon and nutmeg.

So in 1990, they started the Golden Stream Plantation in the Toledo district of Belize to grow cacao and citrus. With the aid of the Belizean Government, they imported seeds and cuttings of spice plants native to their homeland.

The farm is now one of the largest black pepper and vanilla farms in the country and is adorned with beautiful teak, mahogany, rosewood, and sandalwood trees, as well as a variety of other magnificent specimens.

You will never look at your spice rack in the same way again! This tour is perfect for food lovers.
